Microsoft has apparently been testing Linux VMs on their Azure cloud computing platform and will give customers the ability to run their own Linux images soon, even though it looks like they aren’t officially supporting it.

Running Linux on Azure has been a surprisingly big  business-customer request, as well, my contacts said. Microsoft won’t be supporting Linux once the late-March persistent VM CTP launches; instead, it will be up to customers to provide uploads of their own Linux images, I heard from my contacts.

Now, why people would do such a thing when there are several excellent cloud VM technologies that use Linux as the host system as well (which naturally lends itself to good Linux support in the guest role) is anyone’s guess.
